On at a dribble for 30 minutes — so where has our water gone?

- Kevin Jeynes, Karşıyaka

WE HAVE lived on the island for five years and not had a problem with our water supply from Lapta Municipality, even before the supply from Turkey.

The Geçitköy resevoir is once again full after the pipeline issues, however since December 2020 we have had to call or visit the Lapta offices every few days to get water to our house.

They removed the electronic parts from the meter as they stated there was a problem.

The situation now is beyond belief. We will only get water every 10 days if we repeatedly call the offices. When the water does come, it is on for no more than 30 minutes at a dribble and no pressure, which puts approx 50mm of water into our tank.

We get told there is a problem with a main pump at the resevoir, next time damaged pipes, then a leak on the main further up.

We asked the British Residents Society if their local liaison officer could help to ascertain the nature of the problem and when it would be fixed. On two recent occasions they were told the problem with the pipes had been fixed and that water would be on that night. No water came. The next visit we were told that damaged pipes were being repaired and that water would be back to normal that night — the water came on at a dribble for 30 minutes.

We have texted and called every number we have linked to Lapta Water Department, six in total, with no success. The Mayor has been emailed with no response to date.

Our Cypriot neighbours are in the same position as us and receive the same response.

Where has the water gone and why, if the resevoir is full, are we not getting any?

When the Turkish water came online we were told in a huge media fanfare “no more water shortages”.
