Desly Mağusa open up a three-point lead

- By TOM CLEAVER

THERE is now daylight between Desly Mağusa and the chasing pack at the top of the Puma Women’s League after they beat local rivals Yonpaş Dumlupınar at home on Saturday.

The victory leaves Desly Mağusa as the only unbeaten side in the league after four games, with their perfect record having seen them inflict each of their opponents’ first defeat of the season.

It was a derby day of sorts in the capital last Saturday too, with Hamitköy hosting Küçük Kaymaklı.

Küçük Kaymaklı ran out winners on the day, bouncing back from their first defeat of the season to stay within reach of the league leaders and leave Hamitköy winless after four games.

China Bazaar Gençlik Gücü kept themselves in touch with the league leaders with a win away at Miracle Değirmenlik on Sunday, with their hosts suffering consecutive defeats for the first time this season.

Merit Alsancak Yeşilova have recorded back-to-back wins for the first time this season after defeating Vadili away from home on Sunday. The win keeps them in fifth place, three points outside the play-off places, while Vadili remain winless.

Today will see another derby day in Lefkoşa, with second place China Bazaar Gençlik Gücü travelling to local rivals and third place Küçük Kaymaklı.

The league’s two Mesaryabased teams also go head to head today, with Miracle Değirmenlik hosting a Vadili side which is still searching for its first win of the season.

League leaders Desly Mağusa travel to Merit Alsancak Yeşilova tomorrow knowing that a win will guarantee them a place in the play-offs, while Yonpaş Dumlupınar will look to put their first defeat of the season behind them at home against winless Hamitköy.

With the Puma Women’s League now in full swing, it was announced that a women’s cup competition will also be held, and will be named after Turkish Cypriot sportswoman, doctor, and bureaucrat Ayten Berkalp.

The first round of the Ayten Berkalp Cyprus Women’s Cup will be played on Wednesday, with Hamitköy hosting Desly Mağusa, China Bazaar Gençlik Gücü hosting Yonpaş Dumlupınar, Vadili hosting Küçük Kaymaklı, and Miracle Değirmenlik hosting Merit Alsancak Yeşilova. The semi-finals will be held on the following Wednesday, August 24.
