DRINKS BREAKS IN PREMIER LEAGUE

Move is introduced for weekend games due to high temperatures

-

PREMIER League matches this weekend will feature one-minute water breaks midway through each half because of the country’s heatwave.

Mandatory one-minute drinks breaks were first brought in by the Premier League in June 2020 to help players with the congested fixture list after the three-month break because of Covid-19. But the Premier League will this weekend enforce its rule that all games played in greater than 30C heat can utilise water breaks.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning for the next four days, leading to clubs expressing their concern.

A break was called in Sunday’s Premier League match between West Ham and Manchester City while evening games in the Carabao Cup first round earlier this week — including Coventry v Bristol City — also featured water breaks.
