International flavour for ‘Famagusta Handball Cup’
AN INTERNATIONAL tournament called the “Dr Fazıl Küçük Sports Games Famagusta Handball Cup” ended with a beach handball contest in the fenced-off area of Maraş.
Organised by the Prime Ministry Sports Department, the tournament started on August 2 and concluded last Sunday.
President Ersin Tatar, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, Parliamentary Speaker Zorlu Töre and Security Forces Commander Major General Zorlu Topaloğlu were among the large crowd of spectators.
Trophies, medals and plaquettes were given to the teams and to those who contributed to the event after the matches.
The TRNC and Turkey’s women’s teams and the TRNC and Kosovo men’s teams competed in the beach handball match, with the TRNC teams victorious in both matches.
Earlier in the five-day tournament, Turkey’s women’s team and Iran’s men’s team won the indoor leg of the competition, which started at the Lala Mustafa Paşa Sports Hall in Gazimağusa, and the TRNC women and men’s teams were victorious in the indoor Maraş portion.
Teams representing Romania and Uzbekistan also took part in the tournament, with referees from Israel.
Turkish Handball Federation president Uğur Kılıç watched the tournament, along with Teramo Interamnia World Cup president Pier Luigi Montauti from Italy.
