Third Caretta Caretta Festival held

- By TOM CLEAVER

THE Caretta Caretta Festival returned for another year at Karşıyaka beach, with the ever-popular event being organised by the Lapta Municipality, the National Trust for the Protection of the Environment and Cultural Heritage, and the Lefkoşa Lions Club.

The festival gave an opportunity for many people to witness the hatching of baby turtles and their first steps towards the sea. The event particularly targets children with special needs, who otherwise may not be given such an opportunity, with other members of the public also welcome to attend.

President Ersin Tatar was in attendance at the festival, and gave a speech in which he thanked the festival’s organisers, and pointed out the importance of the work done to “preserve the beauties of our island”.

Mr Tatar underlined the TRNC’s credentials as a tourism destination, and also noted that it is important to protect nature and the environment “in order to be able to pass on the beauties provided by nature to future generations”.

At the end of the festival, its participants and organisers were presented with certificates of appreciation.
