University develops monkeypox test kit

-

RESEARCHERS at Near East University (NEU) have developed a PCR test diagnostic kit that can detect the monkeypox disease “in one hour”.

The new PCR kit was developed following the success of the NEU team in developing a PCR test kit for Covid-19.

A statement from NEU said that it is preparing to apply to the TRNC Health Ministry for the permits to use and produce the diagnostic kits for possible cases of monkeypox in the TRNC.

NEU deputy chancellor Prof Tamer Şanlıdağ said: “With the opportunities we have, our qualified academic staff and with the experience we gained during Covid-19, we are ready to meet the needs of our country and our society in case of a possible monkeypox pandemic.

“We will continue to work and produce for public healthcare with all the facilities we have.”

NEU Hospital medical genetics laboratory supervisor Prof Mahmut Çerkez Ergören pointed out that the only local PCR diagnostic kit in the TRNC during the Covid-19 pandemic was designed by NEU teams. “We worked hard and with the same discipline to create the PCR diagnostic kit for the monkeypox virus. We are proud to be the team that is leading the way once again.”

Prof Ergören explained that the diagnostic kit involves taking a sample of liquid from a scab that

forms on the skin.
