TURKEY HITS BACK AT GREEK FOREIGN MINISTER
THE Turkish Foreign Ministry hit back at Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Denidas after the latter posted a series of tweets last Sunday referring to the “illegal occupation” of Cyprus following the second phase of what he called the “Atilla invasion” in August 1974.
Mr Denidas added a photo to the tweets showing a map of Cyprus with blood dropping from the North to the South.
In response, the Turkish Foreign Ministry fired off a series of tweets to put the record straight, which said: “Greek Cypriots violated the 1960 Constitution and destroyed the partnership Republic in 1963.
“Turkey had to intervene after the Greek coup d’état in July 1974, aiming to stop bloodshed and violence against Turkish Cypriots.
“Our intervention was based on London and Zurich Agreements, thus legal and legitimate.
“Thanks to Turkey, peace and stability were established in Cyprus, saving lives of Greek Cypriots as well.
“Our intervention brought the end of the Greek Military Junta.
“Greece and Greek Cypriots never showed the necessary will for a permanent settlement on the Island.
“Greek Cypriots rejected the Annan Plan in 2004, left the table in Crans-Montana in 2017.
“The inherent rights, sovereign equality and equal status of Turkish Cypriots should be reaffirmed for a equitable, just and viable settlement on the Island.”
