Cyprus Women’s Cup heads for semi-final stage

- By TOM CLEAVER

THE Ayten Berkalp Cyprus Women’s Cup launched on Wednesday with its first round of fixtures, with four quarter-final clashes taking place, all on neutral grounds.

In Vadili, league leaders Desly Mağusa saw off Hamitköy to keep their hopes of a league and cup double alive, while China Bazaar Gençlik Gücü beat Yonpaş Dumlupınar in Dörtyol, despite playing the last half hour with 10 women after Şeyma Turgut was given a straight red card.

Küçük Kaymaklı got the better of Vadili in Balıkesir, while Merit Alsancak Yeşilova continued their upward trajectory and showed themselves to be possibly the most-improved side since the start of the season by brushing Miracle Değirmenlik aside in Lefkoşa.

The semi-finals will take place this Wednesday, with Desly Mağusa and China Bazaar Gençlik Gücü facing off in what is, as things stand, a battle of the league’s top two sides, while Küçük Kaymaklı will face Merit Alsancak Yeşilova for the other place in the final.
