ON WESTMINSTER Is Starmer inevitable?

-

STARMER in No10 is all too possible, isn’t it? His only answer to everything is “spend more money”, whether it be the taxpayers or what government borrows in the taxpayers name.

In that sense, despite his attempts to hide it, he’s as committed to fantasy socialist economics as any Jeremy Corbyn-worshipper.

“Spend, spend, spend and to hell with it” (straight out of Rishi Sunak’s magic box of tricks, as well).

There is no doubt that the Tories are in trouble.

The latest opinion poll is all too clear. Labour are 13 points ahead. Add to this the cost of living crisis, the threat of drought and water rationing, the disruptive effects of striking unions, a stagnating economy and the widening perception that an unnecessary Tory leadership contest is paralysing the working of government, and you have a recipe for Tory electoral meltdown.

The 1970s are returning to haunt the Tories as effectively as they brought down Ted Heath.

The cost of living crisis may be worldwide, the effects of the pandemic and war in Ukraine may be at the heart of an economic turndown, and striking workers may be being exploited by politically motivated union barons, but that is no concern of the voters. They are hurting and they will blame the government.

When that happens, people will not vote FOR Starmer, they will vote AGAINST the government. The result will be the same — Starmer in No10.

In such a scenario, one thing is manifestly clear: anyone who wants to be Prime Minister needs their head examining! I believe Liz Truss will be Prime Minister.

I even hope so, but God help her. I wouldn’t want the challenge in a million years!
