Turkish flag waved in defiance of British colonial ban on show
A TURKISH flag that was flown at a home in defiance of a ban imposed by the British colonial authorities in Cyprus has been gifted to the Dr Fazıl Küçük Museum in Lefkoşa.
The flag was presented by Amber İbrahimoğlu to Dr Mehmet Küçük, the chairman of the Dr Fazil Küçük Foundation and the son of the late Turkish Cypriot leader Fazıl Küçük.
President Ersin Tatar, who attended a small flag presentation ceremony, gave a short speech in which he said: “I’m happy that this flag is being handed over to this museum today.”
Mr Tatar stated that “Turkishness” and the Turkish flag “were always protected, even during those years” and that Dr Fazıl Küçük had said at the time “we cannot continue our existence in these lands without Turkey”.
Emphasising the efforts of Turkish Cypriots to exist in Cyprus during the British colonial period, Mr Tatar said that the flag “is an example
of a Turkish Cypriot woman’s efforts”.
Dr Mehmet Küçük also gave a speech in which he said to Ms İbrahimoğlu: “We live
freely in these lands because of your struggle . . . During those difficult days, we never forgot that we are Turkish. Thank you for thinking that this
is the place for this flag, we are grateful to you.”
Following the speeches, Dr Küçük presented a plaquette of appreciation to Ms İbrahimoğlu.
