Young sprinter breaks record that stood for 24 years

THE TRNC’s men’s 200m record set in 1998 has been broken. Young sprinter Taygun Artan Özcihan recorded a time of 20.96 seconds at an athletics tournament in Turkey on Monday to beat the previous record of 21.04s held by Reşat Oğuz. Turkish Cypriot Özcihan, competing for his club Fenerbahçe at the U20 Clubs League Games in Bursa, also smashed his own previous TRNC under-20 record for the 200m of 21.39s. He also broke the country’s under-20 men’s 100m record with a time of 10.47s on Sunday. In both events Özcihan finished second to Anthony George Smith of the Galatasara­y team, who set new Turkish under-20 records of 10.35s in the 100m event and 20.79s in the 200m sprint.
