- By TOM CLEAVER

NORTH Cyprus’s national football team has unveiled its new football kits, which have been manufactured by international sportswear firm Puma as part of a deepening cooperation between the Cyprus Turkish Football Association (KTFF) and the brand.

The kits were unveiled at a showpiece event at the Green House restaurant in Girne, where players and dignitaries alike were treated to their first glimpses of the new apparel.

They were modelled on the night by men’s players Hasan Piro of Miracle Değirmenlik, Serhan Önet of Yenicami, and last year’s Aksa Super League top scorer

Remzi Betmezoğlu of

Mesarya, as well as Özlem Yılmaz, who plays for Desly Mağusa in the Puma Women’s League.

Puma is a worldrenowned sportswear brand, which also supplies the kits of top football teams across the globe including reigning English champions Manchester City, reigning Italian champions AC Milan, and German

giants Borussia Dortmund, as well as the national teams of four-time world champions Italy and twice world champions Uruguay.

At the event, Puma Turkey’s general manager Taner Seyis said that “as a Cypriot, I am feeling a different kind of excitement and happiness today”.

He added that it was an “emotional moment” and encouraged people to go out and buy the shirts.

KTFF chairman Hasan Sertoğlu said that “it is a happy and proud night and we are very excited” and that “for the first time, an international company has made a special shirt for us”. He also praised Mr Seyis for his “patriotism”.

Also in attendance was Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism, Environment, and Culture Minister Fikri

Ataoğlu, who called the event “very, very valuable” and spoke of how he believed that “90,000 shirts could be sold”.

Main opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Tufan Erhürman was also present at the event, and called the partnership with Puma and the new kits “a success story”.

“It is time for all of us to unite these success stories and write a common success story,” he said. “The Turkish Cypriot people will write their own success story together.”

The first order for the shirts came from Fenerbahçe SK, who will now stock North Cyprus football kits at their Fenerium store in Lefkoşa.

The shirts are also for sale at the Kaner Duty Free Shop at Ercan airport, while 5,000 shirts have been sent to the London Turkish Community Football Federation.

In addition to the creation of new national team kits, Puma’s cooperation with the KTFF now extends to the title sponsorship of the Women’s League and now the Ayten Berkalp Women’s Cyprus Cup.

Puma will also supply the match ball for all 480 regular season games and all play-off games in the Aksa Super League and Aksa 1st League this season.
