First ‘Girne Gastro Show’ takes place

THE first ever “Girne Gastro Show” took place in the Girne Bandabulya last Saturday, aiming to promote gastro-tourism to the town and the TRNC, and sustain authentic Cypriot cuisine.

The show featured various exhibition­s regarding the preparatio­n, production, and consumptio­n of local cuisine, as well as stalls selling various traditiona­l Cypriot food items and beverages.

Girne Mayor Nidai Güngördü spoke at the event, emphasisin­g the importance of spreading awareness of local cuisine.

“Tourism in North Cyprus should not be just about hotels and casinos,” he said. “The country also has a very rich gastronomi­c culture.”

Mr Güngördü said food culture has a “unifying nature” and that “everyone has a duty to preserve original authentic Cypriot cuisine and pass it on to future generation­s”. Mustafa Şah, a board member of the Girne Gastro Show, said he believes it will “turn into a festival”

in the coming years.
