Newborn baby taken from hospital is found

A NEWBORN baby that was initially believed to have been “abducted” from Lefkoşa Dr Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital was given to a friend by the baby’s mother because she was going to have an operation, police said.

The issue caused alarm among the public after it was reported in the Turkish-language media that the newborn had been kidnapped.

After the issue became public, the police issued the following statement last Saturday:

“The investigation carried out regarding the baby that was not at the Lefkoşa Dr Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital Gynaecology Service after birth, found that the woman who came to the police yesterday with her lawyer for questioning had been given the baby to care for in the hospital by the mother because she was due to have an operation.

“The baby was handed over to the Social Services authorities to be looked after. The investigation into the incident continues.”
