Wife killer’s court appeal backfires

-

A MAN convicted of murdering his wife will spend an extra seven years in prison after appealing against his original sentence.

A panel of judges sitting at the Criminal Appeals Court decided to increase the sentence handed down to Çetin Sadrazam from 25 years to 32 years.

Mr Sadrazam, who was jailed for the “premeditated murder” of his wife Şükran Sadrazam in 2015 by poisoning her and suffocating her with a pillow, had appealed for his original sentence to be quashed.

He was said to have been left in a state of “shock” after being told that he was handed down the longer sentence, after the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office also launched

an appeal, on the grounds that the 25-year sentence had been too lenient.

Judge Bertan Özerdağ, announcing the Criminal Appeals Court judges’ “unanimous” decision, said the judges agreed that the original sentence given by Lefkoşa Assize Court was too short and rejected Mr Sadrazam’s appeal.
