Yenicami crush rivals Çetinkaya

Leaders cruise to 5-1 win to maintain perfect start

-

SUPER League leaders Yenicami made it three wins out of three in the latest round of football fixtures. The Eagles ran out comfortable winners against their old foes Çetinkaya, historically the most successful club in Turkish Cypriot football, during the second half of the match played at the Lefkoşa Atatürk Stadium last Friday night.

It was the first time the two teams have met in the Super League for more than two years after Çetinkaya were relegated from the top flight in 2020 before bouncing back for this season.

Yenicami took the lead after just four minutes when striker Fikret scored, but Çetinkaya equalised through Batuhan.

Çetinkaya almost took the lead when Mane’s shot hit the crossbar but Yenicami made it 21 when Fikret scored his second goal of the match in the 41st minute.

The second half was a onesided affair that saw Fikret seal a hat-trick in the 59th minute before Sylla and Ali Bayır completed the rout to take Yenicami onto a maximum nine points.

Mesarya moved up to seven points and second in the table on goal difference after beating Yonpaş Dumlupınar 2-0 at home. Both goals came via penalties, which were converted by Mustafa Yaşınses.

Miracle Değirmenlik, who have yet to concede a goal, also have seven points after a hardfought 1-0 win against Gönyeli. Akabuze scored the only goal of last Saturday’s encounter in the 11th minute.

Another team on seven points are defending champions Mağusa Türk Gücü, who are fourth in the standings following a 1-0 victory at home to bottom side Doğan

Türk Birliği, who have failed to find their net in the opening three fixtures. The result stretched Mağusa Türk Gücü’s unbeaten league run, including the end of last season, to 11 matches. Their last Super League defeat at home came on December 19 last year, when they succumbed 4-2 to Yenicami.

Cihangir have five points as they held off a late comeback from Göçmenköy to win 3-2 in one of Sunday’s games.

Cihangir appeared to be in control of the match when they scored two early goals and a third shortly after the start of the second half.

However they were made to sweat when Göçmenköy pulled a goal back with a penalty and then conceded an own goal, but had done enough to hold on to victory.

Küçük Kaymaklı won 2-1 away to 10-man Merit Alsancak Yeşilova (MAY) to achieve their first victory of the season. The visitors took a 2-0 lead with goals either side of the break following a red card for MAY’s Vakkas. The hosts, despite their numerical disadvantage, were able to pull a goal back with a Billy Mehmet penalty but could not find an equaliser.

In the weekend’s other games Lefke and Türk Ocağı both recorded their first wins of the campaign, beating Hamitköy and China Bazaar Gençlik Gücü respectively with 1-0 scorelines.

Last night, after Cyprus Today went to press, Yenicami were looking to make it a fourth win on the trot away to Lefke at the start of match week four.
