Arrests made over İskele construction site fatality

-

FOUR people were arrested on Thursday following the death of a 22-year-old worker on a construction site in İskele.

The four male suspects, aged between 26 and 50 and with the initials BT, RÇ, DY and YO, were taken into custody on suspicion of causing the death of Erdem Ovalı due to “carelessness and negligence”.

Yesterday three of the four suspects were brought before İskele District Court and remanded in custody for three days.

The fourth suspect, an official from the contractor firm, was not brought before court as it was deemed that he would have “no affect on the course of the investigation”.

A police statement said that Mr Ovalı was working on a platform suspended to a crane and was “tied to the construction with a safety rope” around his waist when the crane operator

“pulled the platform” at around 3pm on Thursday.

Mr Ovalı “lost his balance as a result of the tension of the rope to which he was tied and lost his life” the statement added.

“According to the initial findings, he . . . died after hitting his head against a wall,” the police said, adding that the investigation ino the incident is ongoing.

The fatal incident was the second serious accident at a construction site in the space of just six days.

Last Friday a man named Olexii Herherliuk, 38, was left fighting for his life after concrete brick pieces fell on his head.

Police said the incident occurred at around 12.30pm at a construction site on Karaoğlanoğlu Caddesi in Alsancak.

Worker “AI”, 38, was using a concrete pumping vehicle when the metal arm of the pump hit a concrete brick “as a result of his carelessness”.

Pieces of the concrete brick broke off and fell onto the head of Mr Herherliuk, who was working at the construction site, seriously injuring him.

Mr Herherliuk was taken to Lefkoşa Dr Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital and placed under observation in the intensive care unit after receiving initial treatment.

AI and company director “KD” were arrested on suspicion of negligence. The investigation into the incident continues.
