TRNC Post Office issues new stamps for 2022 World Cup

-

THE TRNC’s Post Office has issued a new set of stamps to commemorate the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar.

Two stamps, one worth 1.75TL and the other 6.75TL, have been released, along with a first day cover (FDC) worth 12.50TL.

A total of 40,000 stamps (20,000 of each design) and 2,400 FDCs have been digitally printed at the State Printing Office in Lefkoşa and will be on sale at post offices for one year. The stamps were designed by Görel Korol Sönmezler.

An accompanying information note states that Qatar is “preparing to make history” by hosting the first ever Fifa World Cup to be staged in the Middle East.

“It will be the smallest nation ever to host the global finals, allowing visitors to navigate the country with ease — and even plan for watching multiple matches on the same day,” the Post Office says.

“Add to the mix traditional Arab hospitality and winter weather conditions ideal for watching and playing the matches, and Qatar’s World Cup promises to be one to savour.”

The Post Office notes that “more than 3,000 Turkish police will reinforce local security forces during the tournament” and that Qatar has “also spent recent years constructing some of the most eco-friendly and architecturally advanced sporting facilities ever seen”.

The World Cup starts on Sunday, November 20, when Qatar take on Ecuador in the opening match.*
