Employers in court over worker’s death

THE employers of a man who died following a fall from height at work have appeared before court.

Adnan Özer, 64, was welding in a warehouse belonging to a constructi­on company in the Alayköy Industrial Zone on Tuesday, October 18, when he fell from a height of over three metres and was seriously injured.

He was taken to Lefkoşa Dr Burhan Nalbantoğl­u State Hospital and placed in intensive care but lost his fight for life at around 3am on Monday, October 24, police said.

Three men were arrested and brought before court on Tuesday morning on charges of “causing death by negligence and carelessne­ss” after the Labour Department reported that they had “failed to ensure the occupation­al safety of their employees”.

Judge Nil Elodie Çeliker ordered that the suspects be released on conditiona­l bail pending trial.
