Nearly 4,000 fires tackled in 5 years
THE Fire Department responded to 3,922 fires in the TRNC in the last five years, according to new figures it has released.
Most of the fires – 2,142 – were “land fires”, with building fires (629) and fires in motor vehicles (533) the next biggest categories.
Among the main causes of the fires were unextinguished cigarette butts, short circuits in vehicles and electrical appliances, and sparks from transformers and power lines.
Legal action was taken against 201 people who were found to have caused a fire in the last five years, the Fire Department noted. The figures covered the years 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and up to October 16 this year.
The statement added that a total of 197 fires were responded to in July, August and September of this year.
