Nearly 4,000 fires tackled in 5 years

THE Fire Department responded to 3,922 fires in the TRNC in the last five years, according to new figures it has released.

Most of the fires – 2,142 – were “land fires”, with building fires (629) and fires in motor vehicles (533) the next biggest categories.

Among the main causes of the fires were unextingui­shed cigarette butts, short circuits in vehicles and electrical appliances, and sparks from transforme­rs and power lines.

Legal action was taken against 201 people who were found to have caused a fire in the last five years, the Fire Department noted. The figures covered the years 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and up to October 16 this year.

The statement added that a total of 197 fires were responded to in July, August and September of this year.
