Cleaners taken to hospital as school protests heat up
PROTESTERS were reportedly injured during the latest in a series of demonstrations by school cleaners who say that they have not been paid for almost two months.
The cleaners were hired by a private firm that was given a contract by the National Education Ministry to provide services in state schools, but say their rights as workers are being violated.
The Public Workers Trade Union (Kamu-İş), which is representing the cleaners, held a protest outside Parliament on Monday demanding that the TRNC’s 50 MPs focus on ensuring the cleaners’ rights.
Kamu-İş leaders said they would continue the protests “until our demands are met”.
During the demo tensions ran high as the participants tried to force open the Parliament gates but were held back by police officers.
Cyprus Today’s Turkish-language sister newspaper Kıbrıs reported that scuffles broke out between the demonstrators and police, with at least two people needing medical attention.
