Nobel prize winner wears top supporting TRNC recognition
A NOBEL laureate from Turkey has worn a top calling for international recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as an independent state.
Prof Aziz Sancar, who was one of a team of three people awarded the 2015 Nobel prize for chemistry, shared a photo of himself wearing a black top that featured the TRNC flag and the words “TRNC should be recognized”.
The photo was quickly shared via social media, with thousands praising Prof Sancar for his “patriotic” stance.
The top had been sent to him as a birthday present by Dr Nedime Serakıncı, a close friend of Prof Sancar and a special adviser to President Ersin Tatar.
Mr Tatar said: “On behalf of myself and the Turkish Cypriot people, I would like to thank Professor Aziz Sancar, who proudly wore Serakıncı’s gift and gave great support to our national struggle.”
In September Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made an “historic” call to other world leaders to recognise the TRNC, during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
