Mağusa Türk Gücü open three-point lead
MAĞUSA Türk Gücü (MTG) opened up a three-point lead at the top of the Aksa Super League table with their seventh win in eight matches.
The defending champions won 2-1 away to Lefke last Saturday, with Mustafa Salk scoring both of their goals.
The result lifted MTG onto 22 points, three ahead of second-placed Miracle Değirmenlik, who succumbed to their first defeat of the season.
They lost 2-1 away to Cihangır, who are now just a point behind Miracle Değirmenlik on 18 points and, along with MTG, the only other side that remain undefeated.
Fourth-placed Yenicami ended their poor run of form with a 2-1 win away to Göçmenköy last Friday evening despite having a player sent off in the 51st minute.
Yonpaş Dumlupınar stay fifth in the standings following a 1-0 victory at home to Türk Ocağı Limasol last Sunday. Jonathan Weston scored the only goal of the fixture with a superbly taken free kick in the 72nd minute.
In the battle at the bottom Gönyeli came from a goal down to beat 10-man Çetinkaya 2-1 at the Lefkoşa Atatürk Stadium with a last-minute winner.
The win moved Gönyeli off the bottom of the table up to 12th position on six points, while Çetinkaya are now in last place on four points.
In the weekend’s other games Doğan Türk Birliği’s winning streak came to an end as they drew 1-1 with Hamitköy, while the matches between Mersya and Merit Alsancak Yeşilova and Küçük Kaymaklı and China Bazaar Gençlik Gücü both finished goalless.
Week nine of the league season was due to kick off after Cyprus Today went to press yesterday evening with Yenicami hosting Hamitköy.
