Rising tennis star qualifies in top spot for UK Pro League finale

-

BRITISH-Turkish Cypriot tennis player Eliz Maloney Yorgancı will be looking for glory in the Finals Week of the UK Pro League, which starts on Monday.

The rising star finished first in the women’s league with 58 points as she breezed through week seven of the tournament in Gosling Tennis Centre, Hertfordshire, England, winning five matches without dropping a set.

She beat Jizel Fernandes 6-4, 6-1 in her first match, and Summer Yardley 6-1, 6-1 in her second match to progress to the quarterfinals, where she overcame Nadia Rowsan 61, 6-2.

In the semi-finals, played last Friday, she defeated Beth Gray 6-4, 6-2 before beating Lauryn John-Baptiste 6-2, 6-3 in last Saturday’s final.

It was her second final win of the UK Pro League, following victory in week five of the competition in September.

Speaking after her win, Yorgancı said: “I’m very pleased and I’ve been playing well lately. What’s working for me at the moment is just focusing on what I’m doing on my end on the court and then hopefully, the results will come.”

Yorgancı will be looking to follow in the footsteps of Emma Raducanu, the women’s winner of the inaugural UK Pro League Finals Week in 2020 who shot to fame by triumphing in the US Open last year.

She will take her place alongside other top players in the UK Pro League Finals Week, who will descend on the Nottingham Tennis Centre.

The Finals Week runs from Monday to Sunday, November 27, and will be broadcast live on BT Sport, The Tennis Channel and UK Pro League TV.
