Polish MEP in North Cyprus

-

PARLIAMENT Speaker Zorlu Töre received a visit from Polish MEP Tomasz Poreba.

Töre said he was “very pleased” with Poreba’s visit, which took place on May 8, according to a statement from his office.

National Unity Party secretary-general Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu and Parliament Speaker Chief of Staff İrem Uygun also attended the meeting, held in the Parliament’s VIP room.

Töre told Poreba, who is part of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group in the European Parliament, that the Greek Cypriots and Greeks caused the conflict in Cyprus.

He said the Turkish Cypriots carried out a “purely defensive resistance” and that people’s most important rights are “life and security”.

Töre said that all United Nations proposals for a solution in Cyprus have been rejected by the Greek Cypriot side.

“Everyone should now accept that there are two sovereign and equal states in Cyprus,” he said.

Töre said that it is not against UN principles for a people to establish an independent state.

He also said that the UN Security Council and many European countries have “lost face” and that Turkish Cypriots will not give up their sovereignty and independence.

Poreba thanked Töre for the information he provided regarding the Cyprus issue. What Töre said was “generally in line with his views and thoughts”, Poreba indicated according to the statement from Töre’s office

Noting that he has been working in the European Parliament for 20 years, Poreba stated that he saw that “promises” made to Turkish Cypriots were not kept and that there were “many missed opportunities”.
