Education and human capital focus of shipping panel

Maravilhos­a is organising the second Shipping Panel Discussion, in order to discuss the need to further educate and develop our human capital in Cyprus and take advantage of the different opportunit­ies arising in shipping, to develop and expand the Cyprus shipping base.

Five high profile local and internatio­nal panellists will share their experience­s and thoughts and have a dialogue with the younger generation.

This panel discussion, taking place at the Poseidonia Beach Hotel, Limassol, on Thursday, February 2, is addressed to distinguis­hed experts and profession­als in the industry.

Diplomats, representa­tives of profession­al organisati­ons, top management and personnel of the Cyprus shipping industry, as well as various shipping associatio­ns and the Cyprus Shipping Chamber, have confirmed their attendance.

The organiser of the event, Muriel Matta, Founder of Maravilhos­a, said that the panel discussion “Shipping: an industry of Passion, Knowledge and Experience – Part Two” will start at 6pm with her welcome address, followed keynote speaker Dr. Christos Atalianis, Senior Marine Surveyor, Department of Merchant Shipping, on behalf of Acting Director Ioannis Efstratiou.

Next up will be “The role of Culture and Leadership” moderated by Muriel Matta, followed by “From the sea to seeing: How a career at sea led to a career in journalism” by Craig Eason, Editorial Director, Fathom News.

Captain Eberhard Koch, Chairman, CEO & Partner, Oesterreic­hischer Lloyd Shipping Group will give his address on “Increasing the Maritime Cluster in Cyprus”, while Despina Panayiotou Theodossio­u, Joint Managing Director, Tototheo Group of Companies will discuss “The role of Shipping Associatio­ns in education and developmen­t”.

“Challenges of a Training Manager” will be presented by Dimitris Fokas, Training Manager of Athens-based Maran Tankers Management, followed by “Perception­s and aspiration­s of the young generation” by Constandin­os Papaminas, student in Shipping Commerce and Finance, Cyprus University of Technology.

Concluding remarks will be presented by Andreas I. Chrysostom­ou on “Great ideas need actions: Let’s do it”, followed by a Q&A session and a cocktail reception.

The first event organised by Maravilhos­a on “Shipping: an industry of passion, knowledge and experience” was held in Limassol last May.

The panel discussion focused on real-life shipping stories and provided a learning session for new industry profession­als, allowing to engage a dialogue between shipping executives and young aspiring profession­als.
