QUALITY TIME AT THE CASTLE

Marthe Høver lives in the beautiful Gurrehus Castle and has created a bathroom that has become a room to indulge wellness. The luxurious space has room for alone time and family time.

Between a forest, lake and fields in North Zealand lies Gurrehus Castle, which is where Marthe Høver and her family live in an old servant’s wing on the top floor. The 16th-century home is built in the rococo style, as evinced by the tall French windows, curvy shapes and intricately carved on the wooden panels and the ceiling. It is almost like stepping into a fairy tale when you walk from the couple’s bedroom, into the walk-in closet and then onward to the luxurious and spacious bathroom.

Being a typical morning person, Marthe enjoys alone time here in the early hours. In fact, mornings are her favourite time of day. Nothing beats seeing everything wake up, she thinks.

“I start the day by taking the dogs out so they can run around the park before we go feed the sheep. Then I light a fire, make coffee and tiptoe up to wake up my husband and daughter.”

The bathroom is much more than a room where Marthe can retreat and be alone. The best thing about the room, she thinks, is that the free-standing bathtub is so big that it has room for herself, her husband and their daughter at the same time.

“We spend many wonderful hours and lots of quality time here as a family listening to music and relaxing,” says Marthe.

All the rooms have been renovated with respect for the original style. Also the bathroom, where the old doors, windows and door frames have been preserved. The only thing that breaks with the classic style is the concrete floor, which the couple opted for when the room was renovated. Varnished and hand painted, it almost becomes one with the bureau and the bathroom unit. The couple fell in love with the marble top on the bathroom unit during a trip to Spain.

The French doors and direct access to the balcony allow light to enter from all sides. And with a view of Gurre Lake, there is always something beautiful to look at when Marthe sinks into the bathtub.

OPPOSITE PAGE: THE SHOWER AREA is hidden behind the separating wall so as not to take attention away from the room. The bureau is from Trendfirst and is topped by various vases from Tine K Home. THE AESOP PRODUCTS are both stylish and fragrant. Here, they are joined by a marble ball from Broste Copenhagen. THE WALL LAMPS are called Lilla large and are designed by Sofie Reefer for Nuura. THIS PAGE: THE WIDTH OF THE ROOM is emphasised by the large concrete floor, which is at once raw and decorative. The black stool is from Tom Dixon, while the sculptures are a wedding gift to Marthe from her husband. The mirror is handmade and from Mossroom, the metal boxes are from Tine K Home.
