Hasta hace pocos años, México era visualizado sobre todo por sus playas y zonas arqueológicas, ambas impresionantes para el turismo internacional. Sin embargo, los mexicanos teníamos como destinos otras opciones: pequeños poblados o ciudades, algunas coloniales, históricas o con una belleza impresionante, los cuales condujeron al nacimiento del programa Pueblos Mágicos, que agrupa hoy por hoy 121 con un alto índice de turismo receptivo.
