EGR valve

Land Rover AFRICA Magazine - - TECHNICAL -

What is the function of the EGR valve and when should it be replaced? I read about owners blanking/ removing it.

– Lambrecht Myburgh Ed – The EGR ( Exhaust Gas Regulator or Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve) diverts some of the exhaust gasses produced by the engine back to the intake of the combustion chamber where the fuel is burned. The purpose of the valve is to allow better emission for stricter environmental controls. When an EGR valve stops working, the valve is usually clogged by carbon caused by short distance driving and cold stop/ starts. The symptoms are higher fuel consumption and loss of power. In South Africa it is not necessary to replace this unit and there are blank off kits available which helps cleaner air into the intake chamber.
