THE LANDY FORUM
Mercy Ship Defenders
Being a Landy man, Owen Davis from Cape Town, with camera in hand, didn’t fail to notice several Land Rover Defenders parked on the deck of Africa Mercy – the biggest hospital ship in the world – that was stationed outside the Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town’s V& A Waterfront. Apart from the 450 crew members, a pharmacy, laboratory and five operating theatres, the ship has a total of 27 4x4 vehicles aboard – most of them Land Rover Defenders. Owen says that the same number of Defenders were also visible on the opposite side of the deck. Mercy Ships spokesperson, Kyle Siemens, says that the countries visited by Africa Mercy are “some of the poorest countries in the world with very limited medical facilities.” He also said that it costs around $ 30 million ( R300 million) per year to keep Africa Mercy running. It’s good to know that the Land Rover Defender is still the preferred choice of vehicle for most medical and emergency services globally. The ship departed Cape Town heading to Madagascar.
