D4 to Ruacana

Land Rover AFRICA Magazine - - MIFFBUSTERS -

I own a Land Rover Discovery 4 and I am about to do the drive from Ruacana to Epupa Falls, then south via the Khowarib Schlucht to Sesfontein. Other vehicles in the group are Land Cruisers – a 100 and a groot meneer 200 V8. The Cruiser guys told me they have their towropes ready. The D4 is an awesome vehicle, but I have two reservations: the electronics and the dreaded 19- inch rims. The route from Ruacana is the river road which seems to have plenty of rock while the Khowarib section is 80 km of sand. Neither of these are friends of the 19- inch rims. Have any of you taken the D4 along this route? Shall I rather trade in my D4 for a Cruiser before I go?

Hugh Drummond Ed – I presume that you have the factory tyres fitted. Although these tyres are tougher than one thinks, it is always better to take as much precaution as possible. An option is to invest in a set of Cooper Zeon LTZ all terrain tyres. These are fitted to Kingsley Holgate’s Disco 4 and when I met up with him in Botswana he had only good things to say about them. Take with a good quality tyre repair kit and tyre levers, also throw away the original jack and replace with a decent bottle jack. Enjoy the trip.
