Egypt: A journey to prosperity
In the past four years, Egypt has been in a race against time to implement a group of national megaprojects, which carries a vision to establish a new and modern Egyptian state, in addition to stimulating the economy and creating jobs.
This special issue will focus on how these projects have progressed, how they can provide short- and long-term growth for the Egyptian market, and how they have affected the lives of the country’s population.
It discusses the steps that have been taken towards realising the Sustainable Development Strategy: Egypt Vision 2030 through implementing these ambitious projects with the collaboration of the private sector.
In 2014,the Egyptian government announced the national roads project with the goal of adding 32,000 km of new road networks. In March 2015,the Egyptian government also announced its plans to build a new capital from scratch.The New Administrative Capital is planned to be as large as Singapore (stretching over 700 sqkm) and include 1.1m new residential units to house 5 million residents, along with 660 hospitals and clinics, and an airport larger than Heathrow in London.
On the other hand, in terms of Egyptian military strength and foreign policy influence, huge developments have been witnessed, which position Egypt as an essential regional player.
Last but not least, there have been various social megaprojects aiming to address healthcare issues, as well as implementing a social protection safety net.
