Egyp­tian karate stars eye sport’s Olympic de­but in Madrid’s WKF World Cham­pi­onship

The Egyp­tian na­tional Karate team is pre­par­ing to par­tic­i­pate in the 24th World Karate Fed­er­a­tion (WKF)World Cham­pi­onship to be held be­tween 6 and 11 No­vem­ber in Madrid, Spain.

The Egyp­tian mis­sion will in­clude Yas­min At­tia; Radwa Sayed; Fareal Ab­del Aziz; Giana Farouk; Sarah Assem; Ali Al-Sawy; Ah­mad Al-As­far; Mo­hamed Al-Kutby; Ahmed Al-Masry; Ma­lik Salama; Omar Hegazy; Ah­mad Ashraf; Taha Tarek, and Ab­dul­lah AlKutby.

Madrid’s world cham­pi­onship is a cru­cial one for rank­ing points for Olympic qual­i­fi­ca­tion. Karate will make its de­but ap­pear­ance at the Sum­mer Olympics in 2020 in Tokyo, Ja­pan. Olympic karate will fea­ture two events, Ku­mite and Kata. Sixty com­peti­tors from around the world will com­pete in the Ku­mite com­pe­ti­tion, and twenty will com­pete in the Kata com­pe­ti­tion.

Egypt holds high hopes on a num­ber of play­ers, most no­tably Giana Farouk who clinched a gold medal at the 2016 Karate World Cham­pi­onships in Aus­tria, and Sara Assem who be­came the first Egyp­tian,Arab, and African player to win sil­ver medal at the Women’s Karate Kata Cham­pi­onship.
