UNIDO allocates $5.6m to finance energy efficiency improvement projects in factories

- By Mohamed Farag

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has agreed to finance $5.6m in solar heating projects in factories.

Informed sources told Daily News Egypt that UNIDO approved the amount allocated and has been disbursed to the Ministry of Industry represented by Egypt National Cleaner Production Centre (ENCPC).

However, the funding still awaits administrative procedures and approvals before completion.

The plan aims to use solar energy in the heating methods for about 100 industrial food, chemical and textile factories for four years and will start implementation in 35 industrial facilities in the first year.

Furthermore, in the first two months of the project, high-efficiency electric motors will be introduced to Egypt’s industrial sector. The project is expected to provide more than 3 TW to electric motor users in the industrial and commercial sectors. It will save $50m and capacity of 1,100 MW by 2030.

The savings are expected to increase to 11 TW/h ($2bn) by 2050. Next year, it will reach 270 GW/h.

The source explained that factories would have an opportunity to improve the efficiency of the used engines and that the energy consumption of electric motors would be reviewed through a consultative team in cooperation with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Moreover, policies and rules for the for electric motors with power capacity up to 200 kW and their technical specifications will be determined, either when rewinding the electric motor or buying a new one.
