Shimza launches project to upskill kasi youth

-

Popular DJ and businessman Ashley Raphala, fondly known as Shimza, has added his weight behind the country’s fight against the high unemployment rate.

The disc jockey launched an internship programme through his foundation, Shimuzic Foundation.

Shimza said he has partnered with Hollywood Foundation to establish THE HUB, an initiative that will have a level three SETA accreditation.

He launched the initiative at his food and drinks establishment, the Hang Awt, in Thembisa on Friday. The internship seeks to help break the cycle of poverty by offering practical, real-world experience that can lead to better job prospects.

Fifteen young individuals from Thembisa in the field of event management, design and entrepreneurship will be upskilled through the four-month internship.

The Thembisa-born star, who recently started hosting KUNYE, a global recognition for the rich South African musical heritage.

The project focuses on the development of talented African producers.

He said this is an era where events have become an integral part of social, corporate, and cultural landscape.

As such, the demand for skilled event managers is steadily rising.

“I understand that knowledge that is not shared is knowledge wasted.

“THE HUB exists because I want learners to equip themselves with skills that they can make a life out of,” he said.

The initiative is set to empower and equip aspiring event professionals with the knowledge and skills.

These will be necessary to excel in the dynamic world of event planning and execution.

“We know that this is a continuous journey, and we are most fortunate to have Hollywood Foundation as our partner every step of the way,” he added.

Hollywood Foundation’s Group Transformation Manager Babongile Mkhize said the internship programme includes all aspects of event management.

These are event planning, budgeting, marketing, logistics, and execution – with a monthly stipend.

“The Hollywood Foundation is intentional with the upskilling of the youth in South Africa.

“The partnership with Shimuzic foundation affirms our strong commitment to creating a positive social and economic impact.

“This is particularly key in the context of combating youth unemployment.

“The success of this programme will serve as a model for similar initiatives in other regions and industries.
