CAF set to scrap Confederation Cup

- By Chris Dlamini

THE next Ingwenyama Cup edition champions may not have the privilege of playing in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Why so? This is according to the latest reports suggesting the Confederation of African Football (CAF) will be scraping off the CAF Confederation Cup in the not-so-distant future. This, according to a report by the Daily Post on Tuesday evening, is inspired by the formation of the African Football League, which was started with the continent’s best eight teams based on CAF club rankings.

Ticket

While nothing is final on the issue, if CAF decides to go ahead and do away with the CAF Confederation Cup, it will also mean the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) having to declare the Ingwenyama Cup a non-CAF inter-club competition Qualifier as it currently holds the Confederation Cup ticket. Green Mamba own the ticket by virtue of being champions of this season’s edition. CAF reportedly wants to elevate the African Football League, also making the CAF Champions League a second-tier competition in place of the Confederation Cup.

“The Confederation of African Football, (CAF), is set to scrap its second-tier club competition, the Confederation Cup, according to reports. The Confederation Cup was established in 2004 from a merger of the CAF Cup and the African Cup Winners’ Cup.

“CAF introduced a new competition, the African Football League last year,” reads the Daily Post report.

It continues to state that the African Football League will be elevated as the number one inter-club competition with more teams than the initial eight included.

“It will now be the major club competition on the continent. The CAF Champions League will take the place of the CAF Confederation Cup as Africa’s second-tier club competition. The winner of the African Football League will now be representing the continent in the FIFA Club World Cup,” states the report, but this is only if CAF finally goes ahead with the purported plans.

No further details are given in the report. There was also no immediate comment from CAF.

The Eswatini Daily News’ efforts to reach CAF Media Officer Lux September yesterday were in vain. EFA Marketing and Communications Officer Muzi Radebe said there was no correspondence received by the association to effect yet and referred the matter to CAF Media Officer but as already mentioned, he had not responded to our texts at the time of going to print.
