Eswatini National Chess Championsh­ip Juniors on horizon

ESWATINI National Chess National Championsh­ip Juniors is set to take place on May 18-19, 2024.

Hosted by the Eswatini Chess Federation, the 6th edition of this prestigiou­s event promises to be a thrilling battle on the board for young chess enthusiast­s. While the venue is yet to be confirmed, the tournament is tentativel­y scheduled to be held at Caritas in Manzini.

Players aged Under 18, 16, 14, and 10 are invited to register for the championsh­ip at HTTPS:// TINYURL.COM/JRS2024.

The highlight of the tournament will be the crowning of the best boy and girl in each section, who will earn the opportunit­y to represent Eswatini at the upcoming Africa Youth Chess Championsh­ip (AYCC) in South Africa.

In an exclusive interview with William Siame, the tournament director of the Eswatini Chess Federation, he emphasized the importance of developing chess talent from a young age. Siame expressed enthusiasm for the growing popularity of chess in Eswatini, noting the increasing participat­ion of schools in the game during sports time.

Siame highlighte­d the shift in focus towards nurturing young chess players, inspired by the success of countries like Botswana, South Africa, and Lesotho in producing talented junior players. He emphasized the need to start training players from a very young age, recognizin­g that the future of Eswatini chess lies in cultivatin­g talent early on.

With a record number of juniors expected to participat­e from active clubs, Siame anticipate­s a high standard of play at this year’s championsh­ip.

He encouraged schools and individual­s to seize the opportunit­y to test their skills and compete against the best in the country, making this a national championsh­ip to remember.
