Man (65) nabbed for love of bot­tle

A 65-year-old man ap­peared be­fore Mag­is­trate Mthokozisi Dlamini for drink-driv­ing.

Ge­orge Sibiya was charged with con­tra­ven­ing sec­tion 91(1) of the Road Traf­fic Act 6/2007.

On Jan­uary 11, 2019 around 2240 hours near Lon­tombi area along Cry­don MR5 pub­lic road in the Manzini Dis­trict, Sibiya drove a Toy­ota LDV reg­is­tered ASD 670 DM, while un­der the in­flu­ence of in­tox­i­cat­ing liquor.

In his breath spec­i­men, he recorded 1.2 mg/l, which is way above the le­gal limit of 0.38mg/l. In his mit­i­ga­tion, Sibiya said he was look­ing after his nieces and neph­ews. The mag­is­trate asked him if he was aware of the dan­ger that he posed on the road given his spec­i­men read­ings and his age. “Ushayele­lani unatsile ube umdzala kan­gaka,” said the mag­is­trate.

He added that he could be fined up to E5 000 for his of­fence.

“You are a tick­ing time bomb,” said the mag­is­trate, after he was star­tled by the spec­i­men read­ings. Sibiya was fined E2 000 or 12 months in a cor­rec­tional fa­cil­ity.
