Pressure test and service a must with fire extinguishers
FIRE extinguishers play a fundamental part in minimising the effects fire can cause but only if you ensure they’re adequately maintained and appropriately used. We spoke to Fire Chaps in Manzini specialising in fire extinguishers ( installing and services).
1. They must be recharged after every use
Whether a small amount of extinguishing agent accidentally discharged or you actively released some to fight a fire, always top up what’s been used for when it’s next needed. It might seem trivial at the time but, in reality, that top up could actually save a life, so make it your priority to act promptly.
2. They must be pressure tested and serviced
All fire extinguishers must be inspected and pressure tested every six months, by a professional. Testing is a way to test the fire extinguisher tank for leaks and overall strength. If pressure test failed fire extinguishers must be discarded and replaced with new ones. They need to be serviced every five years and recharged when an extinguisher is discharged.
3. They must be regularly maintained
Installing portable fire extinguishers in a building is not a ‘ set- it- and- forget- it’ task. To ensure they will perform as intended during an emergency, portable fire extinguishers should be regularly inspected, maintained and tested. In fact, it is mandated by law. Do contact the fire champs for everything about firefighting equipment.
