Security personnel help themselves

-

MBA BAN E–Security personnel were seen carrying parcels from Boxer Store into their vehicles. These acts were captured in pictures and videos by people who were concerned by the development, especially because the items were condemned.

In the pictures, some members of two of the country’s three security services are seen carrying plastic bags and loading them into both government and private vehicles.

Among the vehicles was a red sedan where a male Correctional Services officer was seen loading a blue plastic bag.

LOADED

Other items were loaded onto a car belonging to a blue foreign- registered sedan that belongs to a female police officer, while some plastic bags were taken into a government registered kombi used by police officers.

“To make matters worse, the same kombi that was loaded with condemned items was parked right in the road and blocking traffic,” a witness said.

Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati said police were dispatched to monitor the situation and maintain order during the activity.

CONFIRMED

“We are not privy to what unfolded but we have heard that there were items that were given to the shop staff, even though this has not been confirmed. We may not know if the police were asked to assist in transporting the items from the shop,” she said.

Correctional Services Public Relations Officer Gugulethu Dlamini said had not responded on this matter at the time of going to print.

Outlining the condemnation procedure, Nhlangano Town Clerk Jabulani Seyama said it could never happen that security services personnel could be engaged to transport goods from the shop to the landfill as this would be in breach of procedure.
