Basic security online

- - metro. co. uk

Cyber espionage on the rise it is imperative that you protect yourself online, this can only be done by going back to the basics of security online.

Online users are reminded about the following basic security rules to protect themselves:

Do not click on suspicious l i nks emails and messages in chats.

If you have found out about a particular promotion and want to participate,

wwEARLIER this week, VPN seeming unleashed hell for some people. According to FNB Eswatini, several accounts were hacked and certain amounts of money were debited. That means money gone.

The bank advised that people delete or uninstall any VPN app on their cellphone that do not carry security guarantees, especially free VPN.

What is the aim of a VPN in the irst place? A software developer answered, “To protect your privacy online.” He added, but a free VPN only gives you a fraction of the privacy, probably only shields you from basic irewall and ISPs.

People were drawn to the VPN because it could unblock them from social media sites. How it does this? Through the ability to modify your apparent IP address and making it seem you are in a different part of the world. “Yes a VPN hides your real IP address from the web. But the VPN host still knows it, and this information still has some value to someone.”

Apple Certi ied Systems Engineer Howie Isaack told Tech Radar, “It’s simple. When it’s free, you’re not a customer. You are the product.

INFORMATION

In order to give you a service for “free”, the service provider must harvest your information to sell it to a third party. Don’t be cheap. Do this right. PAY for VPN.

You will have a better experience, and you can get tech support if you have problems.

That’s not the only liability, “What this does, is encrypt all of the network traf ic end to end. But this is a different second end: instead it is person to the VPN hoster - not to the actual web site you are talking to,” stated Quora. com forum. If you are still talking to a http- website ( instead of a https website), then traf ic that is intercepted between the VPN host, and the web page you are visiting, is still readable ( unencrypted). The web addresses are readable beyond the VPN host.

John Mee added that much of the web and email traf ic can be sent in clearly readable text across the internet. If someone can intercept the information being sent, they can understand some of the content - leading to security and privacy concerns.

Web pages that start with https actually already encrypt the content end to end ( person to web server), so it is not clearly readable. However, this is just the content. Web requests to a https site still includes the URL or web address in clear text. Why? Because until you talk to the web server, you do not yet know the encryption protocols and keys used to secure the traf ic.

You have probably tried to delete the VPN but it doesn’t work. That’s because you are doing it all wrong. By simply deleting the app, it does not mean you have del e t e d t he connectivity, it requires additional steps. i n
