Madam,

Power is good, but it can be very destructive. I have never met a person who does not want to be powerful in some way or the other. God Almighty i s s o powerful t hat He makes t he impossible possible. We too, to some extent, want that kind of power. Unfortunately, because we are not God, we have to be blessed with power and authority.

We have to work hard to earn power and go the extra mile. Unfortunately; people are so power hungry to a point of enforcing power at whatever cost. Some even murder just to have power.

It is funny to me when people want powerful positions even if the salary is quite low as what matters most to t hem i s t he powerful j ob t i t l e t hat they believe will bring them honour and respect.

We have seen a number of conflicts

t o t hi s column should be neatly handwritten or t yped and should have t he name and address of t he author. We prefer t hem short, t o t he point and t o address t opi cal i ssues. Lett er s published do not r ef l ect t he vi ews of t he edit or, management or st af f , but st r i ct l y r eaders. The edit or r eserves t he r i ght t o cut, correct and i mprove t he qualit y of l et t er s, wit h r egard t o grammar and presentati on, wit hi n r easonable l i mits. The edit or may also r emove r emarks considered l egally off ensive or i n bad t aste and t he names of t he people and establishments concerned. He may also give factual advice when considered justified. arising from power sharing problems. People do not want others to be more powerful than them; hence the outbreak of civil wars in many countries.

Some even breach policies simply because they have the power to do so; and whosoever dares to challenge them faces the risk of being jailed. Gender- based violence is also a power deed. Men, especially, beat up their wives to remind them who wears the pants in the house.

They resort to hitting their wives and children because they feel they are being disrespected; thus stripping them off their ‘ power ’ of being the head of the family.

Most wives are sent back home to be st r ongly spoken t o because t he husband al l eges t hat s he does not respect him and accord him the power he deserves.

The indictment lacks substance; it entails fabrications and propaganda.

RESORT

Power, in my opinion, is not what most people think it is. Power, like l eadership, i s not a status t hat will make people tremble at your sight.

To be powerful means being a servant for your people and doing all you can and beyond to empower as many people as possible. Just like leadership, many people believe that being a leader means having followers; I believe being a powerful l eader i s empowering the people you lead to a point where t hey s upersede and reach their optimal potential, even if it means they become better than you.

That is power, because those people would not have had the opportunity of being the best that they can be without your generousity of according them the opportunity to present their best potential and capabilities.

A powerful person is a person who will use what he has to empower the next person, and not want to oppress others.

The riots didn’t cause loss of life but the shooting of people did. We have no confidence in this circus madness. Do these people know what justice is or they are being paid for nothing?

The opposite actually i s t ruer. Their continued incarceration will f urt her agit at e members of t he public and as such will continue to destabilize an already volatile political environment. In fact the country will burn more violently if they are not released.
