Petition to be delivered to US Embassy

- BY TIMES REPORTER

MBABANE – On Friday, people seeking political reforms in the country shall meet and deliver a petition to the American Embassy in Ezulwini.

This was communicated by Siphofaneni Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Mduduzi ‘Gawuzela’ Simelane in a broadcast aired on the online publication, Swaziland News, last night.

Simelane said discussions that ensued among the ‘forces of change’ resulted in him being assigned to plead with the people to come in their numbers at the American Embassy to deliver the petition.

He said people should converge there at least by 9am as the activities of the day were envisaged to begin at 10am.

The legislator, who is a wanted person by the police, said he had communicated with personnel at the embassy and assurance was given that people would not be intimidated or even arrested.

Plea

He said the plea that was also made by the embassy was that people should not be violent.

The legislator pleaded with the public to come in numbers as there were claims that only a minority was seeking political reforms; therefore, if they came in numbers, it would depict what was really happening.

“I’ve been told the international media will be there,” he said.

Simelane said even dagga farmers should abandon their chores on the day and support the cause as they were among the people they fought for in Parliament when they were being targeted through the Prevention of Organised Crimes Act (POCA).

For those who may need resources, either transport fees or accommodation, the MP said, they should organise themselves and then call the number 7635 2771 through a WhatsApp call for assistance.

Furthermore, he said if it were up to him, there would be two hours strictly dedicated to singing political songs before the petition was delivered.

Singing

Also, he hinted at the possibility of partaking in the petition delivery at around 11:30am by singing with those in attendance.

However, he said his participation was more likely to be virtual.

On another note, Simelane said the same number should be called by those who were arrested during the political unrest in the kingdom if they were granted bail but could not afford it.

He said proof would be needed to substantiate the claim before monetary assistance could be offered.

The legislator also said pupils who may be arrested and needed legal assistance given the current demonstrations in schools should contact the same number if need be.

As a parting shot, Simelane said it was noted that concerns had been raised concerning the delivery of petitions on Fridays.

He said arrangements would be made in the near future.
