More deaths in 2nd wave than third

- BY SIBUSISO SHANGE

MBABANE - An analysis on COVID-19 has shown that so far, the second wave claimed more lives than the third wave.

According to Vusi Lokotfwako, an Epidemiologist in the Ministry of Heath, there were many new COVID-19 infections in the third wave compared to the second wave. However, Lokotfwako stated that there were fewer COVID-19 deaths during the third wave compared to the second wave.

He stated that there were 12 777 COVID-19 infections during the second wave, with 557 deaths, which translated to 4.2 per cent deaths.

There have been 25 989 infections during the third wave with 517 deaths, translating to two per cent deaths.

Lokotfwako stated that research had shown that the COVID-19 vaccine had played a huge role in decreasing the fatality rate.

He said it was for that reason the ministry encouraged people to take the vaccine. Lokotfwako stated that the ministry had joined hands with researchers to make sure that they discovered the vaccine that worked best for the country.

He said the ministry would give proper advice to the manufactures of the vaccine based on the findings. He added that the research was aimed at detecting the new variants on time so that they could advice on the appropriate vaccine. He stated, however, that some variants were foreign.

Lokotfwako registered hope that the country would go back to normal if people were to vaccinate and follow all the necessary health precautions. He said so far, about 200 000 people have vaccinated in the country.
