Take cycling where it belongs – ECA Chair

MANZINI - Eswatini Cycling Associatio­n (ECA) interim Chairman Mbusi Motsa has challenged cyclists to take the sport where it belongs.

Motsa was speaking during the launch of the Mandla Simelane Road Classic which was held at The George Hotel on Wednesday.

The race will be held in memory of the late former ECA President Mandla Simelane, who passed away last year.

The race which will be 120km will be staged in Siteki earlier in December.

“Cycling was once among the top sports in the country. We are getting back to where we belong but we have not reached that level. We need to up our standards as cyclists and inspire others

He went on to cite Sibusiso ‘Swazi bolt’ Matsenjwa, whom he said made the country proud.

“I want to thank all the companies that supported Swazi bolt after he achieved a semifinals finish in the Tokyo Olympic Games. Motivation plays a big role in helping athletes achieve big in sports,” he said.

He went on to thank Mandla Simelane’s daughter Nqobile for pushing her father’s legacy.

“We urge cyclists to come and take part in this race which marks the end of the calendar for the sport. Simelane played a huge role in making me the coach that I am today. He made me discover my potential and the associatio­n fully supports and endorses this race,” he said.

Champion

Meanwhile, National Champion in Makepeace Bailey said he was looking forward to the race.

“I am hoping that I will win the race like I did in the recent National Championsh­ips,” he said briefly.

Muzi Mhlanga the men national champion title holder said since he missed the race last year, he was certain that he would compete in the race.

He said his main aim was to improve his time and win the race.
