MBABANE – It’s non-stop action for sprinters.

They will be back in action when they compete in the Open Track and Field competitions billed for November 21 at Mavuso Sports Centre.

The competition will come after the under18 track and field event held on Sunday at the same venue.

Athletics Eswatini (AE) Public Relations Officer (PRO) Victor ‘Mavikane’ Dlamini said the event would start at 8:30am.

He said only athletes registered with the club were eligible to compete in the events.

Dlamini said the association does not register individuals.

“We promote that aspiring athletes join clubs as they will then be eligible to compete in our events. We want the numbers to be high,” he said.

Some of the events the athletes will compete in include the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1 500m and the 3 000m among others.

Preparations

The under-18 track and field event was in preparation for the team that will be travelling to the AUSC Region V Games billed for Maseru, Lesotho.

AE will be sending 10 athletes to the games and the team was announced last week by the Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council (ESRC).

Senior athletes including Sibusiso ‘Swazi Bolt’ Matsenjwa are expected to attend the game as he is currently in South Africa, where he is in a five month training camp.

“We are happy that finally the government has allowed all sporting codes to resume full competitions. We are looking forward to road running because it is one that has been greatly affected by the COVID19 pandemic,” he said.

Road running was last held in the country before the COVID19 outbreak in March 2020.
