JOHANNESBURG – Unbeaten Stellenbosch continued their fine start to the DStv Premiership with victory over Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium.

There were only two changes from Chiefs that saw Daniel Cardoso and Cole Alexander recalled from their win over SuperSport United, as Stellies brought back Sibusiso Mthethwa and Jayden Adams.

Chiefs were unfortunate not to go ahead as a freekick on five minutes by Khama Billiat bounced in front of goalkeeper Sage Stephens en-route to Cardoso hitting the side-netting with the net gaping.

Another chance followed for the Amakhosi three minutes later when from a tight angle Stephens denied Bernard Parker a third goal in two matches with a solid save.

Stellenbosch opened up the host near the midway point with a ball into space to Ashley Du Preez, who from a difficult angle forced Daniel Akpeyi to a save following a third-man run.

The Amakhosi felt the brunt of another threat and trailed on 38 minutes after Du Preez turned Cardoso to get on the end of Junior Mendieta ‘s pass and beat Akpeyi with a superb finish.

Unfortunate

Chiefs were unfortunate not to go behind again a minute into the second half from the head of Nathan Sinkala before a low shot at the other end from Alexander worked Stephens to a save.

However, Du Preez missed out on a brace a little before the midway stage of the second half when his low shot from an acute angle following a counter-attack hit the post.

Chiefs looked to take the contest full on and the substitution of Nkosingiphile Ngcobo in place of Alexander followed before the last 20 minutes, while Stephens smothered Keagan Dolly.

There were more bright moments for the Amakhosi in the latter stages of the second half, with Eric Mathoho heading a corner inches wide before Khama Billiat missed a free-kick, as the men from the Western Cape held on for maximum points.
