JOHANNESBURG – Sekhukhune United missed the chance to move third on the DStv Premiership table after playing to a goalless draw against SuperSport United last night.
SuperSport, who have been affected by COVID-19, handed youngster Tendamudzimu Matodzi his debut and could only name five substitutes while Sekhukhune recalled Seth Parusnath, Charlton Mashumba, Tlotlo Leepile and gave Justice Chabalala only his second start.
Matsatsantsa were threatening on counter-attacks early on as Ghampani Lungu had a chance to open the scoring in the eighth minute after going through on goal but his strike came off the bottom post.
ATTACKING MOMENTUM
Babina Noko had the attacking momentum and Mashumba had a chance to break the deadlock in the 25th minute with a glancing header in the sixyard box that missed narrowly wide.
Andre Arendse’s charges had another big chance on a counter-attack just before the half-time break after Matodzi went through on goal from Thamsanqa Gabuza’s through ball but his looping strike sailed over the bar.
SuperSport were much more on the front foot in the early stages of the second stanza but it took up until the 67th minute for Selaelo Rasebotja to have a strike at goal from a rebound in the box that was parried away by goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata.
Matsatsantsa were looking to remain in attack as in the 73rd minute they brought on Teboho Mokoena in place of Rasebotja while Sekhukhune packed the midfield six minutes later with the introduction of Pogiso Mahlangu in place of striker Prince Nxumalo.
Mokoena came close to snatching the winner for SuperSport with a looping strike from range that flashed just over the top corner as the sides shared the spoils, with Sekhukhune halting their two-game losing run.
