MANZINI - An early morning phone call put SNUS President Colani Maseko in panic mode on Tuesday.

The Swaziland National Union of Students (SNUS) president, who is a student at the Southern African Nazarene University (SANU), Faculty of Education, allegedly received a call from one of his colleagues at around 7am and the scholar advised him not to come to the university as there was allegedly a group of police officers who were reportedly looking for him.

After learning about the allegations, this publication went to the university and found the president of the union of students printing out his assignment in preparation to submit it. He granted this publication an interview and he alleged that after receiving the phone call, he was concerned, but decided to proceed with his plan to go to the institution.

He said when he arrived at around 8am, he did not find the police and even though he was concerned that the law enforcers were purportedly looking for him, yet they never called him, he continued with his business of the day.

“The information I got was that the group of police officers who came here (university) were plain-clothes police.

“I am worried because they should have called me because they have my cellphone number. This will affect me academically and emotionally,” the leader of the union of students alleged.

Visit

He said he did not know if the alleged polices’ visit was connected to the phone call he received from the Manzini Police Regional Headquarters about a fortnight ago, which invited him to meet the National Commissioner (NATCOM) of Police, William Tsitsibala Dlamini. Worth noting is that he did not honour the invite.

“I am worried that if they are indeed looking for me, what they would do if they find me alone,” he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Police Information and Communications Officer Inspector Nosipho Mnguni

said no police was given an assignment to look for Maseko. She added that the leader of the union of students was not in the police wanted list.

After that, police deputy spokesperson said police officers who were by the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital, which is next to the university, were carrying out their day to day duties. She emphasised that the police did not have an assignment to look for Maseko.

The leader of the union of students is one of the people who are calling for political reforms in the country and the release of the incarcerated MPs; Mduduzi Bacede Mabuza (Hosea) and Mthandeni Dube (Ngwempisi).
