Mbabane parkrun is back

MBABANE – The Mbabane parkrun is finally back.

This was confirmed by one of the parkrun organisers, Neil Robinson, yesterday. The weekly 5km-run is set for Saturday and will start and finish at Mbabane Club. It will commence at 8am.

The parkrun returns after it was suspended worldwide due to the COVID-19 outbreak. In Eswatini, it was suspended in March 2020. Efforts to see the weekly event return in the past year were unsuccessf­ul.

However, some countries like the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales the parkrun returned last year. In England it returned on July 2021 and in Ireland it returned in June last year.

In Scotland and Wales returned on August 2021. It remained suspended in Eswatini due to COVID-19 restrictio­ns. The Municipal Council of Mbabane has finally granted the organisers permission to host the weekly race.

Returning

“We are happy to announce that the Mbabane parkrun is returning this weekend. We are calling upon runners to register before partaking in the race. To register, please head to parkrun.com/countries and select Eswatini. Then click register from the top right menu and fill in the form,” Robinson said.

He went on to remind participan­ts to await their confirmati­on email containing their barcode.

“You will have to print the barcode and remember to bring it with you when you run. Once registered, you are registered for life. You will only have to come with your barcode in the next race so that we are able to time you and put in your data in our results,” he said.

The orginiser invited not only members of the parkrun, but anyone who wanted to keep fit and make new friends. He said they were expecting over 50 runners.
